Field Notes Size Traveler’s Notebook Observations

TN Observations (2)

I bought a Field Notes sized TN off a friend a few months ago. You can read about it here, and watch here and here.

Here are some of my observations regarding the TN.

I watch a lot of YouTube videos. Pretty much all of them are about planners. Several of the channels I follow talk about Traveler’s Notebooks. I acquired a field notes size to see what all the fuss was about.

You’d think someone as obsessed with notebooks and whose love of notebooks means I have [insert # of nbs here] blank stash, that the Traveler’s Notebook system would be perfect for me!

NOPE! It’s too much for me and doesn’t seem stable enough if I’m not writing on a hard surface.

Anyone reading this who uses a Traveler’s Notebook, be it a Midori or one of the many Fauxdoris out there, please comment and give me your opinions on using it.

Here are some pictures showing how I stuffed it with notebooks:

[Update: February 10, 2016]

There will be another traveler’s notebook post coming soon. It turns out I was using the wrong size. Stay tuned if you’d like to hear/read my thoughts on the Narrow I got.

I have never used one of these netbooks. Look forward to you next posts about the smaller book.

    • caendicott says:

Thank you! The new traveler’s notebook is bigger than the field notes size. Sorry about the confusion. Field notes = 3″ x 5″. My new one is bigger than that.

  2. This is such a great idea! And it looks fantastic. I definitely need to figure out a system

    • caendicott says:

I can tell you, so far I’m liking the no rings thing. I didn’t think I’d like not having rings to move things around with.

  3. Hailey says:

I keep those little notebooks in my purse if ever a thought strikes me or something I need to remember comes up. I don’t write in it like a diary but it is nice to mark down quickly or do a couple of doodles and sketches!

    • caendicott says:

I think these little notebooks will become random notes notebooks as well. Individually, they fit easily into my back pocket.

  4. I’ve never heard of a traveler’s notebook. What Youtube Challenges do you watch?

    • caendicott says:

If you’re interested in learning more about Traveler’s Notebooks, check out Carrie Harling (Dispatches from the Frat House) on YouTube and you can just search Traveler’s Notebooks on YouTube. There are a lot of videos.

  5. This one isn’t one of my faves. It’s too bulky or me. Thanks for sharing.

    • caendicott says:

Thank you for your honesty. For as small as the field notes size was (3″ x 5″), it really was bulky. My new one is bigger, but skinnier.

  6. Emma says:

This is lovely! I love the concept of a traveler’s notebook. I carry my bullet journal with me everywhere I go!

  7. Wow! That’s a huge notebook. I feel like that might make me feel overwhelmed as opposed to organized.

  8. Lezley says:

I was thinking about getting one of these for my trip in April. It seems a bit messy to me. Not sure I’ll be getting one.

    • caendicott says:

It may be a size thing. My new size isn’t as bad. Also, my friend Canyon thinks I put too many notebooks in there. Maybe fewer inserts?

  9. Lori says:

Interesting. I never use planners. I write things on lists on my computer or put them in my digital calendar. I know that there is a big ‘planner’ community out there, and I find it fascinating. 🙂

    • caendicott says:

Oh, the planner community is very large and can be very overwhelming. I’m glad digital works for you. It doesn’t for me.

  10. Laci says:

I’m a planner fan definitely but I need to try these little notebooks 🙂 ASAP.

    • caendicott says:

The little notebooks are handy for random notes. If you find you may carry lots around in your bag, you may want to invest in a field notes traveler’s notebook to corral them.

  11. Jen says:

This is a “chunky” FN TN. I can’t deal with that, I think they become unstable when there are too many inserts–3 is the limit for me!

    • caendicott says:

The two bigger sizes I have (posts coming soon) have 3 and 4 inserts in them respectively. I actually tried to really stuff the biggest one, but it was a comical mess.
