The Perfect Planner Tag

This tag list comes from Alexis aka @MissTrenchcoat. You can watch her original video here. Update (12/11/2015): I’ve updated this piece since I first filled it out. One of the planners I mention isn’t pictured, but I included it in the video.

  1. How many paper planners do you own? Show us!

I own 4 paper planners: Raika USA in Bone; Day-Timer portable Malibu in Rose Gold; Day-Timer portable woven/tapestry with bookshelf design; a Plan Ahead personal size in Teal w/ autumn leaf stickers; and my recently refound Plan Ahead Desk Size planner in black simulated leather (not pictured). I don’t consider my field notes size Traveler’s Notebook to be a planner since I don’t have planner inserts for it. It’s a notebook to me. Same with my Mini Flex.

  1. When did you first start using a paper planner?

Oh Lord! I remember my first planner was my mom’s old one. She gave it to me when I was in elementary school. She got a new containment unit and gave me her old one. I have no idea what brand it was and I no longer have it.

Well, that was my first planner. I’ve always had Assignment books of some sort that also worked as planners. I didn’t get serious with my planner until I started college in 2006.

Updated answer: my first real planner was my Plan Ahead Desk Size in simulated black leather. I recently refound this planner and will be doing a post on it soon.

  1. How many planner/calendar apps do you use on your phone? Show us!

I have the standard calendar and organizer apps that came on my iPhone 4S. I use the calendar to set reminders for TV shows I want to watch, but nothing else. I tried to use my calendar app to plan and lost stuff. I also use the Reminder app and the Notes app for list making and general notes. I use the Reminders app as a price book, because none of the apps I’ve looked into do what I want them to do.

  1. Do you prefer paper or digital planners? Why?

Paper all the way. I remember stuff better when I write it down.

  1. If you could design your perfect planner or app, what would it be like?

Warning: Really bad run on sentence ahead. I would get a 5-subject Mead Five Star Flex Binder (had 2 inch rings!), cut it down to Mini Flex size, find monthly inserts I like, punch them, divide the planner into sections, and that’s it.

I don’t know how many sections I’d be able to fit, so I won’t speculate on what they would be. Maybe one day I’ll do that, but we shall see. My current mini flex and planner containment units are going strong, and don’t show any signs on giving out anytime soon.

  1. Which planner do you think is the prettiest? (You don’t have to own this one & it can also be an app.)

The Filofax Malden Baroque in Teal. This one is my unicorn. It popped up in one of the planner buy/sell/swap Facebook groups, and I wasn’t fast enough to get it. It was also really, REALLY expensive ($225.00)! (I also didn’t know how I was going to tell my husband that I dropped $225.00 on a USED planner.)

  1. What’s the craziest things you track in your planner?

I don’t really think anything I keep track of is crazy. It all makes sense to me.

  1. How many hours a day do you spend with your planner?

It’s with me all day. I consult it first thing in the morning. It sits on my desk all day in front of me at work. And it is within arm’s reach when I am home in the evening.

  1. Does your planner go to bed with you?

Yes, my planner goes to bed with me. I have a health tracker in there, and I write down my steps off my pedometer in there.

  1. What is your current planner of choice out of the planners you own?

I’m going to have to say my Day-Timer portable size Malibu in Rose Gold. It’s the one I’m using right now (if it wasn’t my favorite I wouldn’t be using it), and I still find myself drooling over the color.

Alexis challenged anyone who watched her video to do the tag. I’m passing on her challenge.

  1. Ohoh, I am a planner addict. I’m trying an Inkwell Press planner for 2016 and hope I finally obtain planner peace. HA.

  2. Teanna says:

Awesome post! I just found my love of paper planners again and have a filofax. I love the Filofax Malden Baroque in Teal, but man is it hard to come by! haha

    • caendicott says:

OH I KNOW! Luckily, I now have the okay to snag it IF it ever comes around again. My husband understands that it’s my unicorn (like Jennifer from My Purpley Life), and has no problem with me getting it. I’ll just have to be really quick on the draw.

  3. I need to write things down too, otherwise I won’t remember them, so it’s a paper planner for me all the way. Once I started to look beyond the $7.99 ones at Target the first planner that I got was an Erin Condren one, so I’m pretty loyal to her brand (even with the slow shipping/customer service issues) because I love them. I also have a Webster’s Crush planner, but it’s not the same as the EC.

  4. Danielle says:

I love my planner too. It helps me to get stuff out of my head and on to paper so it gets done. Otherwise I forget everything lol.

  5. Leslie Rossi says:

I have quite a few. it’s more about design and enough space to write notes down in the dates for me.

It does boogle me sometimes knowing that I used to use a desk size (8.5″ x 5.5″) and now I’m comfortable in a personal size. I found that if you can find or create the insert you need, you’ll be able to use any size planner.

  6. I love a good paper planner. I just posted one in my “gifting ideas” post that is from Kate Spade. I think I might order it for myself. I had never heard of a “tag” post until today… out of the loop….

    • caendicott says:

I’ve done a few of them. The Planner Tag, the Journal Tag, and The Pen Case Tag. If you’re interested in doing more of them for your blog, search my blog for the posts and copy down the questions.

  7. Tawni says:

I loooooooooved reading this! I’m a planner girl myself (paper, of course), and I prefer the bullet-journaling method. Have you tried it? It’s soooo nice. Super flexible, which is perfect for me. 🙂

    Great post. Thanks for sharing!

    • caendicott says:

I did try to Bullet Journaling method for awhile. Honestly, I found it worked best for me over the summer when I didn’t have a lot going on. I know Ryder released an update for future planning, but I still need something a little more structured.

  8. Ashley says:

I’m so glad to read that I am not the only planner obsessed person in the world. I don’t know what I would do without mine and it feels like an extension of who I am.

    • caendicott says:

Oh honey! I thought I was, and then I discovered the Planner Addict World and found out that compared to some, I’m relatively sane! But it is nice to know we’re in good company!

  9. Jenny says:

    I love planners too.
I currently have a sugar paper for Target one, a day designer, and an Erin Condren planner.

    xoxo, Jenny

  10. Bree Hogan says:

I am a stationery and planner addict 🙂 I’m in selection mode right now for 2016, it’s a really difficult choice, so many cool options out there!

    • caendicott says:

For me, it’s the insert that makes it happen. Yes, the containment unit is pretty, but if I don’t like my inserts, I’m not going to use it. I found some nice ones off Amazon. Have you checked there?

  11. Elena says:

That rose-gold Daytimer is divine! I’ve seen the blue one in Staples, but it’s a desk size. Reminds me of the Franklin Covey Marbella which is discontinued 🙁

    • caendicott says:

My husband got me the blue one for Christmas. I’ve been drooling over it for 6 months and he was “tired” of me hemming and hawing over it.

  12. I asked for a blog planner for Christmas, I can’t wait to be super organized again! I love a good planner!

  13. Roxy says:

I love a good planner but just don’t have the time to write everything down in there. I also run into the issue that when I carry a small purse, my planner is the first thing to go….then I’m without it and stressed out.

    Xoxo,
    Roxy

  14. So fun! I have an Erin Condren that I need to use more. I don’t use it enough!

  15. I need a new planner for 2016. I had never heard of a tag post but this is pretty neat.

    LiveLifeWell,
    Allison

  16. Becki S says:

I’m scoping out a new planner but don’t need one until the middle of next year. What do you recommend??

    • caendicott says:

Passion Planner does have an academic set up, if that is the set you like. Or the undated one. Outside of the Passion Planner, I’d try to find an undated one.
